Fels-Werke has its origins in Lower Saxony. It was here that Steine und Erden GmbH was founded in the late 1930s in connection with the construction of the iron and steel works in the Salzgitter area (now Salzgitter AG). Since 1950, the administration has been located at Geheimrat-Ebert-Strasse 12 in Goslar, and Fels-Werke GmbH has been the official company name since 1971. In 1991, Fels-Werke GmbH, at that time still a subsidiary of Preussag AG, acquired from Treuhand the Harz-Kalk GmbH with the plants Kaltes Tal, Rübeland and Hornberg, all located in the Harz mountains in the municipality of Oberharz am Brocken, as well as Schraplau near Halle and Oberrohn near Eisenach. With the acquisition of the lime plants Rüdersdorf near Berlin and Saal near Regensburg in 1999, Fels-Werke GmbH became the second largest lime producer in Germany. Internationally, Fels-Werke has a market presence in Vitosov (Czech Republic).

Since 2017, Fels has been part of Europe Materials ofCRH (Cement Roadstone Holding plc.), headquartered in Dublin. CRH was formed in 1970 from the merger of the Irish companies Cement Holding and Roadstone Ltd. Today, CRH is the world's leading building materials manufacturer and operates at 3,100 locations with approximately 77,000 employees. In 2019, CRH generated sales of €28.3 billion. CRH is also the leading lime and limestone producer in the UK, Poland and Ireland.
